Boundaries aren't barriers — they're clarity
Weak boundaries show up as resentment before they show up as calendar conflicts. Every "I'll make an exception" trains clients (and you) to treat your rules as suggestions. The operators who last longest are the ones who can repeat their terms without negotiating from scratch each time.
Geography
Draw a service radius or zone you can repeat without burning out. Drive time is part of the job, not a free add-on. Consider:
- How far you're willing to drive on a cook day (round trip, not one-way wishful thinking).
- Whether you charge a travel fee beyond a core zone or simply decline.
- Seasonal adjustments — traffic, weather, school schedules — that change real drive times.
If your zone is "anywhere in the metro," you probably haven't driven to the edges during rush hour. Tighten until it's honest.
Minimums
A minimum booking — per visit, per week, or per event — protects your time and signals professionalism. The point is fewer exceptions, not higher prices for their own sake.
- Weekly recurring: minimum number of servings, people, or a base fee that covers your time regardless of meal count.
- Events: minimum headcount or minimum spend that makes the prep, travel, and cleanup worthwhile.
- One-off sessions: consider whether you offer them at all, or only as a trial leading to recurring work.
Schedule
Which days you cook, how far ahead clients book, and the latest cutoff for changes. Write rules you can repeat without renegotiating:
- Cook days (e.g., Tuesdays and Thursdays — or flexible within a window).
- Booking lead time (e.g., new clients book at least one week ahead).
- Menu/change cutoff (e.g., final preferences confirmed by Friday for the following week).
Fewer slots, clearer story
When you publish that you take "4–6 households per week," that scarcity is real positioning. It tells prospects this is a professional practice, not a side hustle that says yes to everything. Your capacity is your marketing.
